MATERIAL
Exploring Materiality through Wavetable Synthesis: A Study of Sound Generation from Photographic Textures

Material explores the sonification of material surfaces. The project begins with photographic captures of various surfaces, which are transformed into digital wavetables. These waveforms form the basis for sound generation using a wavetable synthesizer. Each track of the album is based on a specific material and carries its name.

The sonification process is linear: the waveforms are systematically scanned to acoustically translate the physical characteristics of the material. Smooth surfaces produce simpler, more harmonic sounds, while more complex structures yield denser and rougher tones.

├  BDLVAR “Box Drawings Light Vertical and Right“
is an audiovisual sculpture. It is placed freely in space and connected to a lamp socket. Once powered, a random algorithm triggers one of several sound and light compositions. This soundscape sculpture is a collaboration between visual artist Benjamin Bronni and musician MinaeMinae.

SONIFICATION - EXPORT Sonification of global trade patterns, data from 1988 to 2021

Using the MFA Data Mod Legacy Software, the export volumes of various countries are translated into patterns. High export values are represented by fast note intervals, while lower values are depicted with slower intervals. The stereo panning makes national differences and economic patterns audible. This audio work uses sonification to offer a new perspective on global economic data, making the dynamic developments of the past decades audible.

Die Karte der Schönheit Filmscore

The documentary film Karte der Schönheit follows landscape planner Michael Roth, who creates a map for the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation to identify Germany's most beautiful and protected landscapes. This map is crucial for planning the energy transition, determining which regions are suitable for wind farms, power lines, and substations. The film highlights the challenges of altering natural landscapes through industrial projects and raises fundamental questions about defining and measuring beauty.

Bastian Epple’s score reflects this search for beauty, remaining fragile and incomplete. Instead of clear themes, the music offers sketch-like ideas that never fully develop. This restraint subtly comments on the film’s visuals, echoing the ongoing quest to define beauty and becoming an integral part of the storytelling.

Album

The album Integral draws on the mathematical concept of the integral, which describes the summation of infinitesimal changes into a unified whole. This idea of wholeness and constant transformation is reflected in the album’s musical composition. At the core of the sound design are an electric piano and two modified cassette recorders used as tape echo devices. The echoes create a continuous flow in which past and present sounds merge. Through the gradual layering and alteration of sounds, a structure emerges that remains consistent while continuously evolving, thus rendering the concept of the integral sonically perceptible.
